After a close win at the Northern Lake County Conference, the Sequoit Academic Team is excited to take their talents to the next competition.

The ACHS Academic Team snagged first place at conference, becoming the first winners of the new Northern Lake County Conference on Jan.25. The team celebrated an undefeated 18-0 season, landing their last win as conference champions. Ranked number one going into conference, the team left with a first place plaque after a tough win.

“Thankfully, Stanley had buzzed in with the right answer,” Junior Emily Luc said. “Everyone in the whole room took a big sigh and I think that was the biggest relief.”

Leading a strong season, every member played a vital part in the team’s achievements. Each player provides strengths that outweigh the weaknesses of others. Varsity team members appreciated the intensity the team put forth this season.

My favorite moment was probably when we won that last match at the last meet,” senior Stanley Liu said. “It was a great feeling to leave a bit of history behind in my, and our other seniors’, last year, since a perfect season was completely unprecedented.”

Liu is known as a fierce competitor for the Sequoits, receiving the 4th place tournament-wide MVP award at the recent IHSSBCA Turnabout Tournament.

The Sequoits celebrated their first place win, similar to last year’s win against Stevenson, which was a real “deja vu,” moment for Liu. The wins bring light to ACHS as being the last champions of the old conference, and the first of the new, creating a legacy for Antioch’s Academic Team. The Varsity team is coached by Tom Deichsel and JV by William Zambole, both of whom helped advise the teams’ successes this season.
