In a battle that lasted two days and sixty total minutes of playing time, the varsity football team ultimately lost 15-12 to Kenosha-Tremper in the season opener.

In the first half, junior Griffin Hill scored two touchdowns for the Sequoits, putting ACHS in the lead over Tremper. The first three quarters of the game was a strong head-to-head contest between Antioch and Tremper with the Sequoits leading 12-7. Then lighting struck.

Multiple flashes of heat lighting led to the evacuation of the stands to the auxiliary gym and ultimately to the cancellation of the game. The Sequoits would have to pick up where they left off at 7 p.m. the next day.

The Sequoits hoped not to let lightning strike twice, refusing to lose to Tremper two years in a row.

ACHS varsity football coach Brian Glashagel said, “Well [the lightning] is not ideal for anyone. But it affected many suburban games last night. It happens, [we] can’t control it.”

The lighting may have ruined the Sequoits momentum with a Sequoit loss the second day.

A Sequoit interception in the fourth quarter seemed promising in achieving a win, but 10 minutes later a Sequoit fumble lead to Tremper’s winning touchdown.

The boys worked very hard and played well, but Tremper managed to come out with the victory. Despite the loss, the team still plans on going far into the playoffs this year, and, with the support of the school, they have a great chance with great players to lead the way.

“I’m looking forward to getting that first win and getting on track for an awesome season,” said senior and captain Matt Stiglic.

The boys plan to keep their heads up as they go to Glenbard South on Sept. 5 to play the second game of the Sequoit football season.IMG_1330 copy
