When it comes time to gift give, there is usually a frenzy and pressure to get one’s significant other something they will enjoy. These times can include any occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day and many more. People across the globe seem to give and receive similar gifts for these holidays. When push comes to shove, everyone seems to go straight for the easy buy and give someone jewerly: here are some theories as to why.

It is a common opinion that jewelry can be a great way to show how much you care about someone. Depending on the quality, jewelry can be expensive and therefore people think that because it is worth a lot, the person who gives it cares a lot. Sophomore Nayla Loos shares this opinion of thinking jewelry has high worth.

I believe jewelry is a go-to gift because boys think that girls will love jewelry,” Loos said. “It isn’t necessarily the cheapest gift depending on the type and quality, but I think girls in reality think jewelry has this high value and it shows that your boyfriend spoils you.”

Another reason people commonly gift jewelry is because it does not require much thought or time. Whether it is a ring, bracelet, necklace, earrings or anything else, it can be bought quickly as a last minute present if the giver forgot about the occasion or did not have the time to buy it. Also, the lack of thought is not shown in the gift and is therefore a safe move for a recipient who may expect a lot.

Depending on the type of person someone is, jewelry may or may not be an appropriate and thoughtful gift. Some people enjoy receiving and wearing jewelry, while others do not. When gifting any type of present for any reason, it is important to think about what the person wants and personally likes rather than giving something because it is what is expected or the “normal” thing to do.
