Major League Soccer (MLS) kicks off its 2015 season on March 6.  There are a total of 20 teams: 17 in the United States and three in Canada. As the MLS approaches its 19th season, the league is still young compared to others, such as those in Europe including the Premier League, but is starting to bring in key players and strengthening its popularity.

“I don’t watch MLS too often. I prefer to watch the European leagues, but I must say the new players are going to be exiting to watch,” said senior and varsity soccer captain RJ Ruano.

This year the MLS recruited some new must watch players. These additions include Steven Gerrard who will play for the Los Angeles Galaxy, Jozy Altidore who will play for the Toronto Football Club (FC), and Frank Lampard with David Villa who will both play for the New York City FC. All players have their own accomplishments in European leagues. These players are expected to shock the crowd as they showcase their talents and expand the popularity of the MLS.

“It displays that the MLS is growing in popularity. Major European players such as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are coming here for the end of their carers, which means they must have some respect of the league,” said Ruano.

The MLS is hopefully going to strengthen its popularity and gain the respect soccer deserves by kicking off their 2015 season with new key players.
