During the spring, summer and fall, Birkenstocks are the go-to shoe for outings.

While production and logistics began in Germany, the Birkenstock craze has blown up in over 90 countries around the world. The Birkenstock brand has been crafting shoes and flexible footbed inserts since 1774. Their website claims to showcase “premium quality shoes that are good for you.” From the common parent comment of, “are you seriously wearing those,” to “jesus sandals,” Birkenstocks are synonymous with fashion confusion.

“From what I’ve heard they’re really comfortable,” senior Denae Eldridge said. “But I’ve never felt the need to buy a pair.”

These comfy sandals might look cool, but are plastered with a hefty price. Elastic material sandals range from $30 to $40 while the higher end leather shoes sell at prices ranging from $70 to $800.

As Spring begins to peek outside, these famous shoes start flooding the halls. Birkenstocks have a stigma of being total hipster shoes for the ideal “Valley girl” or “Indie rock” type of person. The most popular type of Birkenstock is the “Arizona” style, most commonly associated with as the double strap shoe.

“I’ve just recently liked Birkenstocks,” junior Nikki Rigney said. “They’re so comfy and chill.”

The rise of Birkenstocks occurred in the 1960s and 1970s, slowing in popularity until the 1990s. However, today these shoes are a common choice for people all around the world, and especially here in Antioch.
