Top 5: Ways to be a Better Bowler

There are always ways to improve while playing sports, bowling is no exception.

  1. Find a ball that fits best

The first step in improving someone’s bowling skill is to find the right ball. When picking out a ball the ball recommended should be 10% the bowler’s body weight or less. For example, someone who weighs 150 pounds should use a 15 pound ball. If the ball is too heavy, the bowler will not be very accurate since the ball will be difficult to control.

  1. Keep body pointed towards lane

A bowler’s body should be aimed towards where the ball should go, then the shot will be more accurate. If the hips or shoulders are pointed towards the gutter, it is going to make the shot more difficult. Along with keeping straight hips and shoulders, the wrist should be straight also. While doing this, the shot should always end with a follow through.

  1. Take multiple steps towards the lane

Taking one step or no steps at all will not give any momentum for a shot. Antioch Varsity bowler, Samantha Knab said that she takes four steps building up to her shot. Anyone can also take up to four also. The ball also needs to be positioned well building up to get the most out of a shot.

  1. Use the arrows on the lane as an advantage

To get the most out of your shot, a bowlers body should be lined up with the arrows on the lane so the ball rolls straight down the lane. To make sure the ball goes to the arrow, the arm should “reach out” to the arrow as the arm is following through the swing.

  1. Stay positive

Knab said to all bowlers, it is important to have a positive mind set.

“Even if you don’t have all the fundamentals it’s important is to stay positive,” Knab said. “If you have a couple bad shots you need to stay positive and know that you can do better.”
