On Tuesday, October 2, Antioch Community High School’s varsity field hockey team took on Lakes Community High School in the annual Stick It to Cancer game to promote breast cancer awareness. ACHS defeated LCHS with a final score of 2 to 0. This year’s game was dedicated to senior and varsity captain Chelsea Hopkins’ mom, Penny Hopkins, who bravely battled cancer for many years. ACHS and LCHS field hockey players wore pink uniforms on the field and played with a pink ball to support breast cancer awareness. All funds raised during the game went to the American Cancer Society.

Special education teacher and varsity field hockey coach Terry Dewing said, “It [the dedication] is a very nice tribute. I’m sad for Chelsea’s [Hopkins] loss, but it is great to commemorate her mom.”

“I wanted to play well for my dad. He got off work early to come to the game, ” said Hopkins. “It was so nice of Coach Dewing and the team to do that for my mom.It was special to win since the game was dedicated to her.”

The final score of 2 to 0 reflects how well the varsity field hockey team played. Players made smart passes to their teammates and closed gaps on the field to get the ball to stay on offense for more scoring opportunities. Both goals were scored in the first half of the game by freshman Ashley Reiser and sophomore Alexis Duehr.

Dewing said, “I wish to score more. It’s more obvious as they [field hockey team] play more that their stick skills are better, so they can move the ball around people.” The ACHS varsity field hockey team has been improving each game, and the annual Stick It to Cancer game was no exception.
