As spring break comes to a close, here is last week’s news that Sequoits must know for this one.

1. ISIS ATTACKS BRUSSELS AIRPORT, SUBWAY

At least 28 people were killed and dozens more were injured following three explosions in Brussels, Belgium. Two explosions went off in an airport, and a third exploded in a subway station. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks and may be preparing some 400 fighters specifically to carry out terror attacks across the globe.

2. NCAA TOURNAMENT REACHES FINAL FOUR

Three weeks of tournament madness has left just four teams remaining in the 68-team competition. Oklahoma will play Villanova next Saturday, followed by Syracuse and North Carolina. The national championship will be the following Monday.

3. FIRST BLOCKBUSTERS OF 2016 START SHOWING

The past few weeks have seen the likes of “Zootopia”, “10 Cloverfield Lane” and “Allegiant” start showing in theaters across the nation. Zach Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” smashed the box office this weekend, pulling in $170 million. The innovative “Hardcore Henry” debuts in two weeks. It was shot with a GoPro Hero 3 and is entirely in a first-person point of view.

4. TAMPA BAY RAYS, CUBA PLAY FIRST GAME IN 17 YEARS

The first game between Cuban players and an MLB team in nearly two decades took place last Tuesday. The Rays won 4-1, but the implications were far bigger than just a baseball game. The game was part of President Barack Obama’s plan to cement positive ties with Cuba for the first time in decades.

5. TALIBAN ATTACKS PAKISTANI PARK

An explosion in a park in Pakistan killed 65 and injured over 300 people on Sunday. The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it targeted Christians. It was the second major terror attack last week, following Brussels.

6. SPRING BREAK BRINGS IRONIC SNOWSTORMS

While not unsurprising, much of Antioch’s spring break was spent in the freezing rain and snow. The situation was worse out west, where cities like Denver saw a massive swing in temperature that brought huge amounts of snow. Many lucky students escaped for the week on the fine arts’ Disney trip or the Italy trip.

7. SYRIAN FORCES RETAKE ANCIENT CITY

Syrian and Russian forces managed to push ISIS out of the ancient city of Palmyra last week. The city was a vital artery for their transport network, as well as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. ISIS was able to dynamite many of the historical sites within the city shortly after they captured it last year.

8. BERNIE SEES SMALL VICTORIES AHEAD OF KEY DATE

Democrat Bernie Sanders won Washington, Alaska and Hawaii last Saturday, adding to his list of small victories. While Sanders is winning small states, he is still over 700 delegates behind Hillary Clinton. Sanders has to win 75 percent of the remaining delegates to win the nomination.

9. APPLE ANNOUNCES SMALLER IPHONE

The company is replacing the aging iPhone 5S with the new iPhone SE, with all of the technology of their newest phones in a 4-inch form. The biggest draw of the device is its price: at just $399, it fits into Apple’s plan to expand its sales in China and India.

10. NEW RESEARCH BOAT MAY HAVE UNIQUE NAME

The United Kingdom’s Natural Environmental Research Council showed what can happen when letting the internet make important decisions. An online poll for what to name their new $250 million research ship is being led by the name “RRS Boaty McBoatface”. The council seems to be embracing the name, as it has brought unexpected publicity to their branch of the Research Council.
